Often called the ‘Mona Lisa of the North’, Vermeer’s tronie shows a girl in exotic dress glancing back over her shoulder toward the viewer. Neither a commissioned portrait nor a conventional genre scene, it captivates through the luminous pearl, the intimate gaze, and Vermeer’s masterful handling of light. It has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902.
