Golden Autumn

Isaac Levitan’s Golden Autumn shows a bend in a river flowing between banks of birch trees whose leaves blaze in russet, amber, and gold, with a village and distant fields beyond. Painted in 1895 near the town of Tver, the work captures both the brilliance and the melancholy of the season. It became the most reproduced landscape in Russian art and remains one of the defining treasures of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
