Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake is one of Utagawa Hiroshige’s most celebrated woodblock prints from his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Caught in a sudden downpour, pedestrians scurry across a bridge over the Sumida River beneath slanting bands of rain, while the distant shore dissolves into a blue-grey haze. Its bold, simplified design influenced Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including van Gogh, who copied it in oils.
