The Fighting Temeraire

Artist
J. M. W. Turner
Year
1839
Medium
Oil on canvas

The Fighting Temeraire, tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838 is J.M.W. Turner’s elegy to the age of sail. The ghostly veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar is towed by a dark, modern steam tug toward the breaker’s yard, while a blazing sunset signals the end of an era. Voted Britain’s favourite painting in a 2005 BBC poll, it remains Turner’s most beloved work.
