The Ninth Wave

The Ninth Wave is the masterpiece of Ivan Aivazovsky, the great Armenian-Russian marine painter. It depicts a small group of shipwreck survivors clinging to wreckage as an immense wave — the legendary “ninth wave,” the largest and most dangerous — rises behind them, suffused with the warm glow of dawn.
