The Swing

The Swing (Les Hasards heureux de l’escarpolette) is Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s most famous painting and the epitome of the Rococo. A young woman swings high in a sun-dappled garden while her elderly patron pushes her and a suitor gazes up from the shrubbery. The frothy pinks and greens, the playful composition, and the air of aristocratic pleasure make it one of the most beloved images of 18th-century French art.
