Seurat spent two years on this monumental scene of Parisians at leisure beside the Seine, refining his divisionist technique of tiny dots of pure colour that blend in the eye rather than on the palette. The result founded Neo-Impressionism and remains the defining image of pointillist painting. The Art Institute of Chicago acquired the canvas in 1926.
