Munch described the inspiration for The Scream as a shudder of anguish felt while walking at sunset above the Oslofjord, when ‘the sky turned blood red’. The figure’s contorted pose and the swirling landscape fuse psyche and setting into a universal image of modern existential dread. This 1893 version belongs to the National Museum in Oslo.
